Easy modern scrap quilt, without looking like a scrap quilt

By Beth Bastian | January 2, 2024 |

I have no idea what this pattern is called, or even if it has a name. I have seen several variations of this block, but nothing exactly like this. If you know its name please let me know so I can create the designer. I feel that I have been on a two-year quest to use up my quilt scraps, while I know I will never use them all up, I want to get control of the madness. I have found that I am falling out of love with a lot of the fabric I have, and would really like to build a new stash, but the frugal part of me is having a hard time not using what I already have. This quilt is in my top two favorite quilts I did this year. I purposely didn’t add any white or low-volume fabrics. I wanted the colors to shine,…

5 Scrappy Quilts

By Beth Bastian | February 4, 2023 |

Wow, I had too many scraps and was overwhelmed! But I found a solution by turning them into 5-inch squares, also known as Charms or Nickles. And if that wasn’t enough, I even cut up all my fat quarters. I couldn’t believe it when the stacks were 7 inches tall! As a quilter, I love finding ways to make the most of my scraps and fabric pieces. That’s why I started with a bunch of 4 patches, and then took it a step further by turning them into 16 patches. This process not only helps me use up scraps, but it also adds variety and interest to my quilting projects. And who knows, those 16 patches might just turn into the next big thing in my quilting journey. I was eager to start putting my 16 patches to use. So, I decided to turn them into half square triangles. I…

Teri’s Tool Box

By Beth Bastian | February 4, 2023 |

Wow, what a feeling it is to test this quilt pattern made using the Terry’s Toolbox pattern by @laurie_rose_designs! I had so much fun making it and the end result is almost queen size, which is just perfect. The pattern is designed in a way that makes it easy to follow and I was able to complete it within a reasonable amount of time. I was thrilled to hear that this pattern will be offered as a block of the month. It’s a great opportunity for other quilters to try their hand at making this beautiful quilt and have just as much fun as I did. I highly recommend this pattern to anyone who is looking for a new quilting project or gift idea. Click here for the pattern.

Scrappy Yellow Quilt

By Beth Bastian | July 31, 2022 |

This quilt is so easy, yet it has a huge impact!!! It’s simply two four patches and two HST. I started with 5-inch squares of each fabric, once assembled the four patches and the HST came up to 4.5. Once you have the square, you sew them into this very simple block. It always makes me so happy when you put together four of these simple blocks and they create something amazing! I adore how this came out, it was so simple and it was an amazing way to use of your scraps!

Vintage Knit Quilt

By Beth Bastian | July 19, 2022 |

Have you ever seen a pattern that is so different you just have to try it? That was me and this Vintage Knit Quilt. Even though it looks like a ton of small blocks, it’s really just strip piecing…super easy! You do have to keep an eye on who the blocks are laid out, ad it’s very easy to mess that part up. But it really does come together quickly. I went with a super easy meandering quilt pattern and was able to knock it out in less than one hour. So freaking cool! You can get the quilt pattern here.

Paving Stones Quilt Pattern by Sweet Tea Pattern Co

By Beth Bastian | July 16, 2022 |

Jennifer at Sweet Tea Pattern Co asked if I would test her newest quilt pattern, and you know I am always down to test a new quilt pattern. I was not expecting what she sent over. It’s not often I see a new idea like this one, well really it was a very traditional block, just in a fresh new layout. First, check out the center block…this is a perfect place for your fussy-cut fabric. Then just add a few HST and stripes…and you get this! The second design is so awesome!!!! Boom once put together it’s a whole different quilt! Here is where you get the pattern

Deco Quilt

By Beth Bastian | January 30, 2022 |

Did you all see L & Behold Stitchery’s newish Deco Quilt pattern? Man it amazing!!!! First, you make these blocks…seems easy…but the number of times I had to unsew the pink checker blocks, should have warned me on what would come next. I was feeling pretty good about how it was coming together…until I saw the first mistake. Then I noticed the second mistake. From there this top went into time out for a few days. After an epic amount of ripping and cursey words, this is how it came out! This one is a keepers! Here is a link to the pattern

Rough Diamond Cut Quilt

By Beth Bastian | November 6, 2021 |

Is it just me or does this block remind you of old-school Tron? Or HAL from 2020? Anyhow…a few months ago I joined Bre’s Quilt Along with her first pattern called Rough Diamond Quilt. It was a fun take on the log cabin block, with great color placement. 16 blocks and bam you get this beauty! Click here to get the pattern.

Entropy Quilt

By Beth Bastian | October 24, 2021 |

Can we talk about my love of the HST? I am sure I have spoken about it before, but if the pattern is full of HST I am in. I am not great at sitting still and meditating is almost impossible for me. But creating and trimming HST is so soothing, and is how I relax…well that and drink wine! @squats_and_runningstitches designed this pattern, I am still in awe of how these designers find new ways to layout the HST and turn it into something new. Sigh…it’s so pretty! Click here to buy this pattern.

Backyard party quilt sal hosted by Then Came June

By Beth Bastian | September 19, 2021 |

I have been saving/collecting this fabric for just the right pattern, and I think I found it. Once everything got cut, I organized each block. Side note, those baby clips I am using in this picture are game-changers. You really need to go to your LQS and pick some up. Over four weeks, we made a total of 20 blocks. I am going to take a moment, and fangirl over these fabrics. Damn, they are pretty!!!!! Here is the link to the pattern

Beth

Hi there!

My name is Beth and I am the Garland Girl who runs this blog. I have been quilting for almost 15 years, and let’s face it quilting did not come easily to me. Do you remember that kid who had no rhythm, but danced her heart out at every recital? Well, that was me in the quilting world. I remember one night about a year in, I was working on a baby quilt ( the shower was the next day) and after every wash, at least one seam would pop open….good times. The crazy thing have I loved everything about quilting. I found joy in the process, even though the binding on the table mats I gave my mother in law fell off after two washes. A few years in, I realized that I needed to practice my quarter seam, and learn how to bind a quilt properly. I have worked so hard at my craft, man I have made so many mistakes and found so many ways to do things easier than I had to start writing them down.
